One of the big bonuses with the Britax Chaperone car seat is that you can adjust the strap height without having to re-thread the straps – a giant advantage in those first few months when baby is growing rapidly! This strap adjustment, coupled with the infant insert for babies less than 11lbs, which actually goes UNDER the cover (not a bulky insert that makes the straps difficult to reach), make it an ideally fitting seat for newborns and babies in their first year.
Another unique feature is the anti-rebound bar, which presses against the front seat and adds stability to the positioning of the car seat. This feature is not found on many infant seats. Britax also boasts that it has True Side Impact Protection, which will help protect your little one in case of a side collision on the vehicle. To even further the stability, they have included built-in side lock-offs, which mean the seat is guaranteed not to slip sideways more than an inch either way. All together this makes for a very secure and safe seat – something you are definitely wanting for your brand new baby!
Comfort wise, this is a very nicely padded car seat. It is also available in a few color schemes, one of which is a very funky “cowmooflage” pattern. Britax also says the straps are “anti-twist” – many users of other comparable seats have reported great frustration with strap twisting, so this is also an advantage of the Chaperone.
The footprint of the Chaperone is quite deep, which can cause problems in vehicles with a small back seat. The best thing to do is measure the distance from your back seat to the front seat and compare with the Britax Chaperone dimensions – this is a good thing to do with any car seat you are considering buying!
With the stay-in-car base and available stroller options, this is a versatile car seat for transporting around your newborn. It likely won’t last for much longer than the first year, but many people prefer to have a specialized infant seat and the upgrade after the first year to a convertible seat that can be rear or front facing. The price tag is a little hefty, at $229.99, but if it is within budget the Chaperone may be what you are looking for.
