Deciding if breast feeding is right is not a simple question with one answer fits all women, it is one however that only you can answer. Some women are able to breastfeed with no problems whereas other women have problems with their baby being able to nurse. This question is one where the more information you have the better you will find the answer, so find out information from your doctor if he or she thinks there will be any problems with breastfeeding.

Most women are happy to breastfeed but there are some who have problems with their milk coming in or having the baby unable to thrive on it when it does come in. Mothers who have HiV, TB, or in addiction to drugs or alcohol should not breastfeed because the disease or drugs can be passed through the milk into the baby. That is when women usually decide that it is not for them, from a medical standpoint. There are other considerations then medical reasons why to breastfeed or not, these include the impact on a career; choice of the mother based on convenience or health and the expense of not breastfeeding because buying formula is expensive. One reason why a mother may not breastfeed is if she has given birth to twins or triplets.

The basis of deciding to breastfeed can be for reasons of tradition and to provide the best nutrients for the baby, because the mother's milk is full of antibodies and nutrients and is easily digested by the baby. In other societies and cultures, there is no question as to breastfeed or not, it is customarily done as part of having a baby and raising a child. In many of the western countries, the breastfeeding is more of a choice, yet every individual mother makes this decision, one way or another. If you do breastfeed your baby, it is recommended to do so for at least the first six months, many mothers do so for longer. In some societies children are breastfed until the age of two or three.

Socially, in the business world, nursing mothers are not as accepted as they could be by employers and prospective employees. This could be for a number of reasons such as a concern for productivity and the influence of traditional values of motherhood. Some nursing mothers can work from home while they are spending that precious bonding time with their child. Studies have shown that nursing mothers have less chance of bone loss later in life and less chance of certain types of cancer developing. Legally, breastfeeding is considered a privacy issue, with rights under the law. The choice is up to the mother but it is generally recommended to breastfeed your baby, if at all possible.

Extensive research has made it possible for us to know that deficiency of vitamin d in pregnant women can cause an adverse effect on the mother as well as on her child. Vitamin D is an essential component both for the fetus and the expecting mother. It is for this reason that doctors recommend health supplements containing Vitamin D so that the child and the mother receive this in sufficient amount.

There are some foods that are a natural source of this vitamin. Some of these are egg yolks, fish, liver and fortified milk. Vitamin D associates with other forms of vitamins and minerals to ensure the proper growth of the bones. Vitamin D also helps in the absorption of bodily nutrients such as calcium and phosphorus. Many people are of the opinion that only the consumption of calcium will make their bones healthy. This is a misconception, since there are quite a number of biological components involved in the development of our bones.

Some recent studies that were conducted in Europe indicated that the bone mineral content of a child is directly dependent on the content of Vitamin D in the body of the mother. This clearly means that if an expecting mother does not suffer from Vitamin D deficiency and has optimum levels of this vitamin in it, the child will have a greater amount of bone mineral content when he or she starts growing older. This study was done on children who were in their ninth year and whose mothers had consumed vitamin D during the time of pregnancy. The level of bone mineral density found in these children was relatively more.

Some few years back, research done on the health of bones proved that the intake of vitamin D minimizes the chance of people having fractures. Fractures are a result of weakened bones, and there are some diseases, like osteoporosis which makes the bone become weak and thin. This shows that Vitamin D provides strength to our bones. However, latest research has shown that Vitamin D can also strengthen the bones of the child if an expecting mother consumes supplements containing Vitamin D.

Studies have also indicated the development of the intrauterine and early postnatal systems contribute to the addition of the bone mineral content. This may not be immediate, but may happen at some later stage in life. All these also influence the chances of occurrence of osteoporosis. It is also these studies that suggest those women who are pregnant or those who are elderly suffer from the deficiency symptoms and results of vitamin D deficiency.

Researchers have showed that people who are exposed to the natural sunlight everyday have very few chances of having Vitamin D deficiency. However, the risk of having cancer of the skin due to over exposure to the sun prevents many people to use the benefits of sunlight exposure. Insufficient exposure to the sun further results in limiting the production of Vitamin D in the body, and this gives rise to the symptoms related to the deficiency of the hormone.

Health shop products, organic options and the green movement are by no means new or foreign concepts to most people these days, but it seems the world is still divided when it comes to many of the pros and cons involving green living versus mainstream ideals. At the end of the day, it’s up to everyone to make up their own minds however, when considering what your children are eating; here are some points to ponder…

1. Lose the toxins

Eating a predominantly organic diet reduces the amounts of toxic chemicals we ingest on a daily basis. Over times these toxins build up due to chemical residues, and children are more susceptible to these than adults are. By choosing to feed your children nutritious health foods that are organic, locally grown and free of excess toxins, you can ensure they get the best they deserve.

2. Vitamin power

We all need them to stay healthy, children more so, especially during their formative years. While the nutritional value of organic foods has not been shown to be vastly different from that of mainstream food, there is something to be said for the way in which it is produced. Further studies need to be done in the organic food arena to determine the nutritional benefits, but until then it wouldn’t hurt to introduce products you know to be free of harmful chemicals into your child’s diet.

3. Avoid the genetically modified debate

If you feed your child organically grown produce, you’ll be avoiding the GMO arena completely. While GMO foods are a huge part of the food industry, there is a lot of controversy surrounding it and many tests have suggested that the consumption of GMO foods may significantly contribute to children developing allergies.

4. Less additives

We’ve all heard the MSG debate and how certain colourants can cause children to suffer allergic reactions and hyperactivity. If you choose to feed them predominantly organic and natural health foods, you will not have this problem. Many ingredients commonly found in your usual children’s sweet packet have been linked to a host of illnesses and often, ingredients banned in one country often aren’t in another, which means you never really know if what you’re feeding your child is acceptable.

5. Avoid bad reactions

Some products formulated for babies contain so many chemicals it would make your head spin. It can take more than 200 different chemicals to formulate the ‘fragrance’ you so often find in baby products. There isn’t enough research to indicate what these chemicals can do to young infants with prolonged exposure, so instead of taking the chance choose a gentle, chemical free product instead.

While the green movement may be labeled as overly paranoid and critical of the world at large, there is no crime in being a bit more discerning of what you choose to expose your children to. If you’re unsure what to buy, visit your local health shop. Products are coming onto the market every day that are kinder to the earth, animals and humans alike.

Breastfeeding is very healthy for babies but it is not always a convenient exercise. Breast pumps help resolve this problem by being able to feed your baby in public or with friends by giving your baby the best nutrients from a bottle. And you can even let someone else feed your baby with the milk you extracted with these pumps. There are a few different types of breast pumps to choose from, including hospital grade breast pumps, electric breast pumps, and manual breast pumps which are operated by hand.

Hospital Grade Electric Breast Pumps:

These are the best that money can buy. If you can afford a breast pump with this kind of quality, I highly recommend you do, because there is quite a difference with hospital grade and the ones you can get for under $200. These are particularly useful if you are going to do a lot of feeding. These have dual pumps that are very efficient in getting as much milk as you will allow them to take. These have suck and release cycle that mimics a baby to help the process to be as natural as possible and so they do not drain you completely dry. The hospital grade pumps are pretty heavy so they are not great if you want portability. They can weigh anywhere from 18 to 25 pounds., so it would be a good work out to lug this thing around. You can either buy or rent one, but if you will use it a lot and plan on having more than 1 child you should just go ahead and buy one. They can cost about $1,000 and up and offer the best in breast pumps.

Electric Breast Pumps:

For a more economical approach electric breast pumps can be purchased anywhere from $100 - $300 depending on the brand and what features you want. These are fully automatic and offer different suction levels. They often come with dual pumps as well, but the main selling point of these breast pumps is their functionality combined with their convenience. You can have some of the features that come with a hospital grade breast pump with the portability of a light weight case. You can get a fair amount of use out of these pumps and many will even run in a car's cigarette lighter, so you can pump away some breast milk while your husband is driving. Might be a little awkward if you are driving with dual breast pumps attached and you get pulled over by a cop. Would make a great story that we would want to hear about here though.

Manual Breast Pumps:

This is the cheapest approach for those who just want an extra breast pump in addition to their hospital grade or electric pump. These are nice and small and fit nicely in a suit case when traveling. Most of the manual pumps are for only one breast at a time, but you can breast feed your baby with one breast while using the pump on the other if you wanted. These are hand operated and can take some getting used to and can be quite the work out if you are going to be using it a lot. But for only around $20 - $30 it is the most affordable option of all.

I am sure you have heard that phrase that "breast is best", but there are circumstances where breastfeeding is either impossible or just not the best solution for the mother and child. And with all of the choices for baby formula out there, it can be tough to choose which kind will be the best for your baby. Well, in a world where many things are synthetic, there are some organic formulas out there that are great for the health of your child.

You Can Find Organic Baby Formula Anywhere:

Not too long ago it was actually hard to find a reliable source to buy your organic baby formula, but now there are brands like Similac, Enfamil, Good Start, Neocate, and a few others that have the natural stuff. You can find some that are soy based and some that are milk based depending on what is best for your child. As the demand grows for these products the supply has greatly increased and you can get them wherever baby formula is sold.

See Some of the Recommended brands of baby formula

It was only a few years ago that there was a big scare involving baby formulas in China that caused some babies to get sick and others even died because of a substance called melamine, which is used for false advertising. Melamine is used to boost the protein content of the food, but can be toxic when mixed with cyanuric acid. There has never proven to be any of this substance in the baby formulas in the US, but sticking with the major brands helps to reduce chances of this happening, since their quality control is usually better.

There are so many options when considering baby formula today. Some are lactose free, added rice formulas, predigested formulas, and even premature baby formulas. So depending on what situation your baby is in and what allergies he or she may have, will determine what formulas you should be checking out. Always consult with your physician before trying a baby formula to make sure it will be safe and then you can check out some of the different kinds of formulas on the market.
