One of the worst sounds that you will ever hear as a parent is the sound of your child crying endlessly in the middle of the night. A crying baby is stressful to everyone living in your home, including your spouse and any other children that you have. No matter what you do, little Jane or John just will not go to sleep. Before you start ripping your hair out in frustration, you should try a few ways to get your baby to sleep. Those tried and true methods that your mother swears by just won’t cut it for today’s children.

Make a Comfortable Environment

Believe it or not, your baby sleeps best when she feels comfortable. That might sound simple enough, but you have no way of knowing what a baby finds comfortable unless you are in that same situation. Look around your nursery, paying particular attention to anything that seems distracting. The reason your baby might not go down at night is because of some stimuli in the room. You might find that lights from the street shine through the windows, the mobile above her crib keeps rotating and scaring her or that loud noises from other kids in the house keep her interrupt her sleep patterns. The only way to get her to fall asleep easily and quickly is by making her nursery comfortable. She might even dislike the feel of the sheets or bedding against her skin.

Associate Nighttime with Sleep

Your baby must learn that nighttime is when he sleeps. When he first comes into the world, you work around his schedule. When he cries in the middle of the night, you wake up and feed him. When he sleeps during the day and stays up all night, you pattern your schedule around his schedule. You cannot get your child to sleep at night if he still associates sleeping with day time. No matter what you do, he will still follow his own schedule and you find yourself forced to follow it too.

Find a way to associate sleeping with a particular activity such as rocking. Sit down in the rocking chair and gently rock your baby to sleep. You can also use a particular stuffed animal or another toy, which the baby begins associating with sleeping. Some parents find it helpful to use a bottle when putting the baby to sleep, playing music or singing. Within a few days or weeks, the baby learns that falling asleep to that motion, sound or feeling is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. When you start doing the same thing at night, you help your baby fall asleep faster. The baby can drift off because he feels the same comfort that he feels during the day.

White Noise and Sleep Trainers

White noise might be a godsend for getting your baby to sleep. Electronic devices give off white noise, including fans and air conditioners. The white noise gently puts your baby to sleep by soothing him into slumber. You can also try using sleep trainers. These devices mimic the sound of your heartbeat, play soft music or make another noise that helps the baby fall asleep. The sleep trainers do not work for all children, but you might find one that helps your baby get to sleep. When the baby sleeps, so do you and everyone else in your home.

A Better Night’s Sleep for Your Child

Most parents can probably relate to the problem of their child continually waking up during the night and not being able to get back to sleep. There are generally three very distinct reasons that cause children to wake up during the night and these tend to vary by age. They key to conquering the problems is being calm and understanding what is causing your child to wake.

Nightmares

Restless Sleep

Medical Issues

Generally speaking children don’t wake in the middle of the night just to get your attention. However they may need your help and reassurance to get back to sleep. If you understand what the issue is you should be able to get them off to sleep quickly.

Bad Dreams

Everyone has bad dreams, whereas adults generally can get over it and get back to sleep again without too much difficulty, children find it a lot harder and they need to learn how to understand and cope with it. Really little children may not really understand what woke them up, and children who are older will understand but will be scared and want to sleep in their parents bed.

Restless Sleep

This can be caused by not having a good bedtime routine or by being in unfamiliar surroundings, for example on holiday. A good routine is vital to solving this problem. A good bedtime routine will help our kids switch off from the day and relax for sleep. So, music and books can play a key role in this. Reading them a short bedtime story in a relaxing voice will help. Using a night light or dim lamp instead of the main light, and avoiding caffeine or sugar near bedtime should also help.

Medical Issues

It is also possible that your child is waking because of a medical issue. Children can suffer from insomnia and sleep apnea just like adults. If your child is complaining of aches or pains or their sleep problems have been going on for a while you should visit your doctor.

Tips to help your children get a better night’s sleep

Don't feel like you have to go and check on your child every time you hear a noise, and when you do go and check on them be quiet and don't turn all the lights on. In fact you might find a flashlight helpful so you can find your way about the house without risking walking them.

If your child is afraid of the dark then help them learn that nighttime is not scary. Why not go out in your garden and count the stars.

If your child is afraid of the things that go bump in the night then why not take them on a monster hunt. Switch on all the lights before you read them a story and hunt for monsters to make sure their room is clear.

If your child takes a lot of naps during the day, some experts believe this can reduce the amount of hours they can sleep at night. So you could try cutting down the length of time they nap during the day.

When there's a new baby in the house, you can expect many sleepless nights. No matter if you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, a newborn baby will need to be fed every few hours. This means, lots of midnight feedings and lack of sleep for you. Having sleepless nights is actually considered a rite of passage for many new parents.

So, what can you do to get some much-needed rest? Consider the following tips for success to help your baby sleep better.

Learn Baby's Rhythm

A newborn baby will sleep at least sixteen hours each day, however, they don't sleep for 16 hours stretch. A new baby often sleeps for one or two hour stretches throughout the day. Your newborn's sleep pattern will be erratic at first, which can truly exhaust you. As the weeks and months pass, your baby will develop a more regular sleep pattern.

By the time your infant reaches three months old, he can sleep for five hours (or more) at one time. By six months old, your baby can sleep through the night (anywhere from nine to twelve hours).

Although your sleep patterns are being disrupted initially, just remember that it won't last forever. In fact, there's a new study that links infant sleep to growth spurts. According to a 2011 research study, when babies start to take longer naps or increase the frequency of the naps they take, this means they will have a growth spurt soon.

Give Your Baby a Pacifier

Whether or not you should give your baby a pacifier depends on your personal preference, but there have been numerous studies that have linked pacifier use to better sleep. A fussy baby may settle down better when given a pacifier. In addition, using a pacifier can reduce your newborn's risk of dying from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).

Use Stimulation During the Day

During the daytime hours when your little one is awake, you should stimulate all of his senses. Talk, play and sing to your baby. Keep your baby engaged and interested. All of this stimulation may help your baby sleep better at night.

Establish a Bedtime Routine

It may help your baby fall asleep better if he has a consistent bedtime routine to expect. For example, some parents bathe their baby before bedtime. Others spend time with their little ones reading a bedtime story. If you are consistent about your bedtime routine, your baby will soon associate these with sleep.

Remember to keep everything in perspective. You may have a difficult sleeper. Some infants are harder to put to sleep than others. Other babies may have trouble soothing themselves back to sleep if they wake up in the middle of the night. Just remember that it takes time to understand what helps your baby sleep, and what doesn't work.

If you have any worries about your child's sleeping habits, contact your pediatrician for ideas and suggestions.

It has been established that deep and regular sleep is crucial to the health of your children. Parents are usually not aware of amount of sleep that their child requires. According to doctors and experts newborns, infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school-age children require 11 to 18, 14 to 15, 12 to 14, 11 to 13, and 10 to 11 hours of sleep per 24-hour period respectively. While some children meet these requirements, there are others who have problems falling asleep.

As is the case with other herbal health remedies, there is little or no clinical testing that is done on these natural sleep aids for children. Most of these are just home remedies passed down through generations, although their effects on a child’s wellness have not been scientifically investigated.

Here are some of the most common natural sleep aids for children:

California poppy induces sleep and eases anxiety and pain.

Chamomile tea is a gentle sleep aid that also helps in soothing upset stomachs and nausea.

Passion flower helps those who are unable to sleep due to anxiety, muscular conditions or pain.

Valerian root is the most common of natural sleep aids for children and is taken as a tea.

Herbs are normally considered to be harmless. However, natural sleep aids for children should be administered with caution. If your child is taking any kind of pharmaceutical drug, you should first consult with your child’s doctor to see if this may pose any danger to your youngster’s wellbeing.

Here are some things that you can do to help your child sleep better at night.

Help your child develop a routine as bedtime draws nearer. It may be the time after having dinner or a bath. Other situations include changing into comfortable pajamas, reading a bedtime story, tucking your child into bed and turning off the lights. A routine will always send a signal that bedtime is near and the child will subconsciously prepare for it.

Do not allow your child to engage in computer games, rough and tumble games and watching television before retiring to bed. Over stimulating the brain when it should be shutting down will affect the child’s sleep pattern and his/her overall health.

Your child’s sleep can also be affected by the foods he/she consumes. Do not allow your child to consume stimulants such as caffeine, soda, candy and tea (with the exception of herbal tea) before going to bed. A glass of warm milk is an ideal substitute for such stimulants. Warm milk also serves as a natural sleeping aid for children.

If your child is afraid of the dark, then use a dim light such as a lava lamp to help the child feel secure.

Seek professional help for your child if the sleep disorders become serious. Discipline or behavioral problems that affect the child’s sleep should be handled by a counselor or child psychologist.

Implementing these sleeping practices along with administering the aforementioned herbal health remedies will assist your child in having a better night’s rest.

At some point in your parenting journey you will be confronted with the inconsolable child. You may feel like a failure. You may feel like crying yourself..you may even cry- its ok! Assuming you have tried that usual culprits: dirty diaper, hungry, hot/cold, tired, teething, gassy etc. There are a few tricks to help soothe your baby and you.

If you have a crab put it in water…If you have a baby who likes bathes put him or her in the bath tub. This works more for babies four months and older. But older babies really enjoy being warm, wet and naked. It is useful for distracting a grump as well as easing gas pains.

In terms of gas pains there a few things that you can do to bring some relief rubbing or patting their tummy in circles, bicycling legs, holding them against your arm or up on your shoulder.

You know the old saying about vacuuming to get a baby to sleep?? Try it sometime. White noise is familiar to a baby. Mama’s womb is not a quiet place the white noise simulates it and helps; as does being held on Mama’s chest with your baby’s ear about heart level. They find the sound and rhythm of a heartbeat calming. Another trick is ‘Shhhing’ with the baby up on your shoulder (like the burp position) “Shhh” her. “Shhhhh” sounds like noise in the womb and helps calm an irritated baby.

Walking, rocking, climbing stairs are also other things that mimic being in the womb and along for the ride everywhere that mama went. Ever notice how your baby would be quieter during the day than at night? It is because your movement rocked her to sleep and when you were ready to rest she was ready to party.

Swaddling is another popular tactic. When in the womb towards term- there is not a lot of room to move around so the swaddle mimics that snug warm feeling and again calms them. Along the same lines as the above is baby wearing. It combines some of the above theories into one neat little package. Use a ring sling or a wrap for the most effective results (in my experience). By wearing your baby you are in essence swaddling them close to you in a snug carrier, close to your heart so she can hear it, and you can walk and go about your business rocking her to sleep gently, just like she was still inside mama.

It is important to remember that sometimes babies cry- if something seems off- call your pediatrician- they are there for that- I can almost promise that you are not the first mom to go through something like this. If you feel yourself getting close to losing it- call a neighbor a friend someone to relieve you. If you cannot find someone to relieve you put your baby in a swing or crib and close the door… NEVER SHAKE or DROP or HIT your BABY, EVER. It is far far better to sit in a crib for a few minutes while a caregiver composes herself than be injured.

More than anything remember you are not in this alone.
