Have you given any consideration to making your own baby food at home? You may have hesitated due to uncertainty, but it is easy to create healthy, nutritious meals for your infant in your own kitchen. Babies are typically ready to begin eating mashed, solid foods between four and six months of age. It is best to introduce foods slowly, allowing four days to seven days between each new food addition. This allows you to monitor your infant for allergic reactions such as indigestion, diarrhea and rash. Creating your own baby foods may reduce the risk of reactions and provide more complete nutrition than commercial products found in a jar.

Making your own baby food is easy

Do not be overwhelmed at the idea of making baby food. The concept is simple: select fresh ingredients, cook them without adding fat or leeching nutrition, and process the food to a mushy texture. For early foods, vegetables should be steamed gently, and fruits need only to be mashed. If you already own a food processor, there is no need to run out and purchase any special equipment. A food processor is a quick, easy way to turn fresh fruits and vegetables to a pulp. Food mills are designed to press foods through a fine sieve. These hand-operated machines are great for parents looking for an inexpensive way to create baby food.

Homemade baby food is more nutritious

Commercial baby food contains added fat, sugars, salt, fillers and preservatives that may be inappropriate for your baby’s diet. Homemade baby food is additive-free. Because you make the choice of which ingredients go into your baby’s homemade food, you will be sure of everything that goes into her body. A milled or processed banana makes a delicious snack for baby without the added preservative acids found in commercial baby food bananas.

It is less expensive to make your own baby food

Baby food in a jar is outrageously expensive. The ingredients within the packaging cost nothing near the price you are expected to pay. Manufacturers bring in large profits from baby food sales. A single apple may cost around $0.60, and you may get two or three servings from it. Allowing for preparation and refrigeration costs, your price for three servings may increase to $0.73. The same three servings cost over $1.50 in baby food jars. Making your own baby food is a terrific way to save money as your baby grows. It may be a good idea, however, to browse the baby food section of your grocery store to get ideas about food blends. Once you establish that your baby will have no reaction to a number of foods, it is safe to begin feeding them to him in various blends.

Homemade baby food satisfies you and baby

Homemade baby food tastes much better than commercial products. Purchase a single jar and compare the difference for yourself. Your homemade food will have more vibrant flavor and a better texture than anything you can find on sale in the grocery store. Knowing that you have provided a delicious, healthy meal for your child at a fraction of the cost can give you such a sense of satisfaction and pride that there is no reason not to try.

If you have a new baby in your family, congratulations! Now is a time to cherish and celebrate. Children grow up so fast, which is why documenting a baby’s infancy is so important and precious. One great way to do this is with baby photography. Professional portraits of your little one can convey any mood or aesthetic you want and give you something to treasure throughout your own and your child’s life.
Interested in getting some newborn photography done? Here are three steps to make sure your session goes optimally.

1) Figure Out Who Will Be Involved

This may seem obvious, but consider who will be present at the photo shoot. Of course you want your newborn in the pictures, but will he or she be the sole subject? Perhaps you want other family members, like siblings, parents, grandparents or cousins, in the photos as well. Considering who will be in the pictures is important because it can completely alter the kind of mood achieved.

2) Plan Clothing & Theme

Once you know whom the portrait’s subjects are going to be, you will want to think long and hard about the clothing and theme you’re looking for.

There are some simple guidelines for clothing, although you can really do whatever your heart desires. For one thing, you may want to dress anyone who is participating in similar colors, because it will lend a nice sense of cohesion to the pictures.

If your child is getting pictures taken around a certain holiday or during a particular season, it can be a good idea to dress him/her in corresponding colors. Pastels can be lovely for springtime and Easter, while red and green or blue and white can be wonderful choices for Christmas or Hanukkah.

Perhaps you want to have effects applied to your pictures, like sepia tone or black and white, which will make clothing colors less important. These are all things to consider. Remember, you can always get ideas from the photography studio if you need assistance.

3) Schedule Your Photography Session

You can go online to find a photography studio, such as Picture People, near your home. Most websites have tools that allow you to type in your state or zip code to find the locations nearest you.

When it comes time for your photography session, there are a few more things to think about. Newborns can be finicky about food, sleep and comfort. Consider your baby’s schedule before choosing a time and date for your photos. Choose a time after your child has been fed and when he or she is freshly awake from a nap. This may increase the chances that he or she will be cooperative with photographers. Consider bringing comfort items like blankets, bottles and/or favorite toys to keep your child happy.

Portraits happens to be one of John's favorite things to write about. If you'd like to find out more about Baby Photography, please visit http://www.picturepeople.com/

One of the worst sounds that you will ever hear as a parent is the sound of your child crying endlessly in the middle of the night. A crying baby is stressful to everyone living in your home, including your spouse and any other children that you have. No matter what you do, little Jane or John just will not go to sleep. Before you start ripping your hair out in frustration, you should try a few ways to get your baby to sleep. Those tried and true methods that your mother swears by just won’t cut it for today’s children.

Make a Comfortable Environment

Believe it or not, your baby sleeps best when she feels comfortable. That might sound simple enough, but you have no way of knowing what a baby finds comfortable unless you are in that same situation. Look around your nursery, paying particular attention to anything that seems distracting. The reason your baby might not go down at night is because of some stimuli in the room. You might find that lights from the street shine through the windows, the mobile above her crib keeps rotating and scaring her or that loud noises from other kids in the house keep her interrupt her sleep patterns. The only way to get her to fall asleep easily and quickly is by making her nursery comfortable. She might even dislike the feel of the sheets or bedding against her skin.

Associate Nighttime with Sleep

Your baby must learn that nighttime is when he sleeps. When he first comes into the world, you work around his schedule. When he cries in the middle of the night, you wake up and feed him. When he sleeps during the day and stays up all night, you pattern your schedule around his schedule. You cannot get your child to sleep at night if he still associates sleeping with day time. No matter what you do, he will still follow his own schedule and you find yourself forced to follow it too.

Find a way to associate sleeping with a particular activity such as rocking. Sit down in the rocking chair and gently rock your baby to sleep. You can also use a particular stuffed animal or another toy, which the baby begins associating with sleeping. Some parents find it helpful to use a bottle when putting the baby to sleep, playing music or singing. Within a few days or weeks, the baby learns that falling asleep to that motion, sound or feeling is a relaxing and enjoyable experience. When you start doing the same thing at night, you help your baby fall asleep faster. The baby can drift off because he feels the same comfort that he feels during the day.

White Noise and Sleep Trainers

White noise might be a godsend for getting your baby to sleep. Electronic devices give off white noise, including fans and air conditioners. The white noise gently puts your baby to sleep by soothing him into slumber. You can also try using sleep trainers. These devices mimic the sound of your heartbeat, play soft music or make another noise that helps the baby fall asleep. The sleep trainers do not work for all children, but you might find one that helps your baby get to sleep. When the baby sleeps, so do you and everyone else in your home.

Any teenager who has ever babysat children (other than small infants who still sleep quite a bit) will tell you that no matter how well-behaved a child is, he or she may still want the babysitter to provide a break in the routine.

If you have a few ideas handy, this can be done with no problem.

1. Play age and content appropriate video games (with the parents' permission).

Play games that require two or more players, such as AssaultCube.

2. Arts and crafts

Ask the parents if you can bring a few simple craft supplies, such as paper plates, glue, safety scissors, stickers, yarn, old magazines for cutting out pictures, and other things. This can keep kids entertained for hours.

3. Play indoor games that require movement.

Old favorites like hide-and-seek, "Mother May" and follow-the-leader are always fun. Working parents may often be too tired to do this, so it will be a real treat for the kids.

4. Play age appropriate board or card games

If there is a fairly wide gap in children's ages, play with the younger ones first, then when they are in bed, or engaged in another activity, play with the older ones.

5. For older children, a "Circle story" game may be enjoyable.

In a "Circle story" someone starts with, "Once upon a time...", and then someone else adds to it and so on until the story is complete.

6. For younger children simple games may be fun.

These are such simple matching games as color to color, object to object, etc., and imitation games: touch your nose when I touch mine, make this face, move in this manner, and so on. If you only have one child, he or she will enjoy the one-on-one attention, but two or more will still be able to participate and have fun.

7. Read to them or listen to them read

Select age appropriate books. Parents will really appreciate this, especially if the child seems more eager to read for or with the babysitter.

8. Go on a nature walk, weather and age permitting

Give kids a list of things to look for and collect if they like, such as flowers, pine cones, sticks, leaves for younger children, and unusual rocks or different types of plants for older children. Make sure you are aware of what the poisonous ones (ivy, oak, and sumac) look like, and continually caution younger children not to put things in their mouths.

9. Put on an art show

Pass out crayons, colored pencils, and blank paper. Let the kids get creative, then display them and let them explain what they've drawn.

10. Cook or make a simple snack

Again if children are old enough and parents give permission. Make something simple such as no-bake chocolate/oatmeal cookies or even instant pudding. Even small ones can get in on activities if no-cook ones are chosen.

Thinking up new and interesting things for children to do will not only help them, but will help make the experience more enjoyable for you. You won't be bored, and neither will the kids.

As parents, you develop a natural drive to ensure that your children have the best chance at life. You want them to do well in school, to stay out of trouble, to read lots and to learn to be polite and build great social skills so they are ready to interact with the world.

But what if they do nothing but sit and play computer games or watch television all day? What does that do to their development?

Thanks to a never ending stream of hi definition television programmes designed to absorb their attention and games that have no conclusion, our children are being sucked away from a more natural way of playing and into a sedate pixelated social skill sapping world, that will teach them with some skills (e.g. hand-eye coordination, problem solving) but won’t give them the simple practical skills you can learn from playing a game out in the park.

But aren’t Parks Dangerous?

This is indeed a misconception, taught to us by the news and television dramas, that has led to countless families scurrying past parks with their children concealed in pushchairs to avoid what they perceive to be a dangerous zone not to be entered.

This is partly what a new government backed scheme in England hopes to curb. ‘Play England’ will enlist up to 20,000 volunteers to help develop, build, renovate, manage and staff countless play areas in England, as well as run play schemes, adventure playgrounds and even street parties. It will mean that play areas get regenerated and are then staffed so that parents feel more comfortable letting their children play there and will hopefully bring the community closer.

So one thing you could do to get your children playing again would be to support this scheme when it comes to your area.

What Else Can You Do?

Well you could get rid of your television and their computer games console, but you know that that would be more trouble than it’s worth. No the best thing to do is to lead by example. Children, especially young ones, are incredibly adept at picking up your habits; if you read books all the time, they will learn that that is something they should do to, if you smoke cigarettes and watch reality television all day, what do you think they will learn?

The best advice, and something that worked for me, was to regularly take them some place new. Maybe to a swimming pool, to an indoor play area with soft play equipment, the beach, the library…anywhere. Just get them moving and lead by example.

How often does your child play outside?

Bridget Bernardhorse manages several adventure playgrounds in her area. She believes soft indoor play equipment is the key to alleviating the fears of nervous parents afraid to leave their child.

You career requires you to meet certain demands, which can at times come into conflict with your desires as a parent. However, financial stability is an important part of raising your children in a healthy environment, which is why many parents choose to put their young kids in the hands of a qualified childcare provider while they work. Typically, there are three types of childcare options:

• Spouse, Friend or Relative
• Out of Home Day Care
• In Home Day Care

Choosing an Out of Home Day Care Provider

Unless you have a relative or friend who is willing and competent enough to care for the child, it is likely you will depend on a day care service. Parents in this situation should begin by researching the various day care services in the immediate area.

The first consideration should be the needs of the child. If your child likes to be active and socialize, a day care center with a more preschool environment may be better suited than one that encourages quiet activities. It is important to talk with each provider about the type of atmosphere that is promoted and the number of children will be together each day. For example, a large group may not be ideal for a demure child. Inquire about the qualifications of the staff, the turnover rate, and whether they are adequately compensated. An underpaid caretaker may be less motivated to do their job. Confirm that the child care center itself meets the regulations put forth by the state.

Once you have determined what is best for the child, you can then begin to consider your needs as a parent. Location, cost, and available hours can be the difference between choosing one provider over another.

Choosing an In-Home Day Care Provider

For many families, choosing an in-home childcare provider makes the most sense. The one-on-one attention and care your child receives from a nanny or babysitter is important for their development. However, it can be difficult for parents to find someone they can trust with their infant, as some nannies may burn out and place the child in front of the television. They also are the most expensive option with regard to day care.

Given the importance of finding a reliable person that you trust, your search for a nanny should begin during the pregnancy. Most parents are most comfortable leaving children with family members, but they may not always be available. There will times that you need to have a babysitter or nanny on call.

When choosing a nanny, ask them about their qualifications and the path they took to becoming a childcare provider. Often times, the people who have an emotional connection to their job will be better with children than those whose motivations lean toward the financial. Caretakers with a more visceral love for the job will be able to describe their feelings with more depth and recall seminal experiences they had with young infants. They should have an understanding of what children need and more specifically what your child needs. They should be flexible enough to adapt to your child's naps, hunger, and desire to play.

Generally, you will want to hire a more experienced nanny, particularly with young infants. However, as the child gets older, you may feel it is safe to go with a cheaper, teenage babysitter. If this is the case, have the babysitter come over during the weekend and interact with the child until you feel comfortable leaving the two alone. Regardless of who cares for the child, remember to always leave a list of emergency phone numbers to call in case an accident occurs.

While most people generally associate sports with boys, the truth of the matter is that a sports themed baby shower is perfectly suitable for babies of either sex. If the mom-to-be and/or dad-to-be are sports fanatics, a co-ed baby shower revolving around sports is a great way to go. It’s a great way to have some fun and ‘tailgate’ before the big event.

Go Team – Choose a Theme
Before you get to work on coming up with awesome invites and game day treats, it’s time to decide on a theme to use for the shower. You know you want to incorporate sports, but do you want something more specific? Incorporate the home team, favorite team, or a particular sport that the parents-to-be gravitate toward. Or you can simply go with an all-around sport theme.

Game Day Tickets
Take the time to create invitations that mimic game day tickets, with a tear-off stub RSVP, and encourage guests to wear attire that shows off their favorite sports team. Choose invites that match the sporting interests of the parents and the rest of the party theme.

All Decked-Out
There are many ways you can decorate for a sports shower, whether it will take place inside or out. Choose balloons and streamers like those of the favored team, or simply go with mom-to-be’s favorite color. Plates shaped like various pieces of sports equipment are easy to find. Hang a baby jersey and other team attire on a clothesline. And have plenty of balls, bats, helmets, and other pieces of equipment around the room.

No. 1 Fan
Have a contest and see which of your friends is truly their team’s number one fan. Encourage guests to go all-out with face paint, hair color, and whatever else they can think of. And don’t forget to give a trophy or medal for the most creative winner.

Cake
There are plenty of options when it comes to shower cakes. You can buy a sports ball-shaped baking pan and decorate it like a particular ball, or you can make (or purchase) a sheet cake and decorate the top with sports equipment. Cupcakes are always a hit and can be decorated in team colors or to resemble sports balls. Also, if the sex of the baby hasn’t been announced yet, it can be fun to reveal the sex at the shower by coloring the inside of whatever cake you decide on. A sports theme might automatically make people assume the mom-to-be is carrying a boy, until they bite into pink colored cake within a soccer ball cupcake.

Concessions
Think tailgating, Super Bowl parties, and concession stands when it comes to choosing party food. If you’re looking for an easy buffet option, have a build-your-own nachos table with plenty of toppings to choose from. BBQ hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill outside if you’re having a spring or summer shower. And don’t forget the chips, dips, hot wings, sports drinks, and beer (assuming the parents-to-be and guests are comfortable with the idea).

Game On
While you can play regular baby shower games at a sport themed shower, chances are the men in attendance aren’t going to be thrilled with the idea. Instead, opt for sports related games instead to get the men involved. Sports trivia can be a lot of fun, but some of the ladies may feel the guys have an unfair advantage. Games like baby bottle bowling and a bottle drinking contest are sure to keep everything light and entertaining.

Decorating Jerseys
Another great idea is to have a jersey decorating contest. Give each guest (or couple) a baby sized jersey or onesie and let the parents-to-be judge which is the best. Don’t forget to have a football or baseball (or other piece of sports equipment) and a sharpie for guests to sign. These make great, meaningful additions to the baby’s nursery.

Sports Betting
What sports gathering would be complete without a little betting (just for fun, of course). Have guests bet on when your little sport will arrive and how much he/she will weigh. If the sex of the baby hasn’t been revealed yet, guests can wager on the sex as well.

Favors
Give your guests a tangible reminder of the great times they had at the baby shower with a fun sports-themed favor. Mini sports balls, foam fingers, team-colored chocolates, t-shirts with team colors and logos, or gift certificates to a batting cage or driving range are all fun favors to consider.

However you decide to execute your sports themed shower, make it original. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box and have a little fun. Give the parents-to-be a wonderful celebration of their little sport’s pending arrival.

It can also be a bit stressful and tiring, so preparing well in advance for your baby's arrival is key if you're to settle down comfortably.

There will be a fair amount of things to buy, but perhaps not as much as you might have first thought. There's a great deal you don't even need to think about just yet, for example highchairs or equipment for food other than milk. Just remember that there's a lot you can probably find second-hand, especially clothing.

Things you'll need ready:

Clothing:

Don't go overboard with clothes - your baby will be growing very quickly, so just stick to the following:

Baby Gros - Get a few of these so that while others are in the wash or drying, you can keep baby in a clean one

Cardigans - Buy two of these, for Baby to wear over the top of a Baby Gro if it's cold

Basic vests - They will also need vests under the baby gro if it's very cold

Tops with Poppers - Very useful for quick changes

A small hat

Mittens

Socks

Nappies - Newborn babies need their nappys changed at least 10 times every day (often it will be more), so get yourself a big stash of them

Bedding, Changing & Towels:

This varies depending on your chosen way for baby to sleep. You can keep them in a carrycot at least to start with, and then get a moses basket and a cot.

Mattress - this will be to fit the moses basket and/or cot

Cot sheets

Cellular blankets - provides lightweight warmth by trapping more air with a special weave structure

Blankets

Small, soft towels

Changing mat

Changing station - this saves your back when constantly changing nappies

Large Equipment:

Baby will only need a carrycot from a pram to sleep in, to start with. This makes it easy for you to keep baby with you at all times. Later on, you can buy a cot.

Pram or pushchair which can lie flat. This keeps baby's back protected while it's growing

Rear Facing Car Seat - Absolutely essential if you're taking your baby home from hospital in the car. You can get one to double as a carrycot, or one that fixes to a pushchair frame.

Large washing up bowl for bathing

Sterilising Equipment (if bottle feeding)

Small Equipment:

Bottles

Teats

Bottle brushes

Breast pump (if breastfeeding)

Nursing bras (if breastfeeding)

Breast pads (if breastfeeding)

Mild baby bath liquid

Baby wipes for nappy changing

Listening monitor

Thermometer - essential to check the room temperature is just right

Baby Pages is a retailer of baby equipment and pushchairs such as the mountain buggy, icandy and babystyle models.

A baby shower is a festive happy occasion and you always want your table or tables to have a nice centerpiece. If you know the sex of the baby, then I would recommend creating a centerpiece with either pink or blue. However, if yo don't know the gender of the baby and you can always use a neutral color (i.e. yellow), or a combination of both (pink and blue). There are several easy ideas you can use to make the perfect baby shower centerpiece:

1. Floral / Plants - One of the easiest ones to use is a floral arrangement or plant for the centerpiece. You can purchase fresh flowers at your local grocery store and arrange them in a pretty basket. If arranging flowers doesn't come easy for you, purchase a pretty plant and tie a stuffed animal to it with a pretty ribbon.

I once attended a shower where the host took a sweet beanie baby and tied it to a potted plant with a pretty ribbon - it looked great.

2. Balloons - If you are on a strict budget, balloons are always an inexpensive option and always make a good centerpiece. Tie the balloons to a colored weight and be sure that the strings are long enough not to block the view for those sitting at the table. You can also purchase some 'It's a boy' or 'It's a girl' colored confetti to place on the table.

3. Gift Baskets - If you have a guest who is planning to bring a basket filled with items for the new baby - why not display it as the table centerpiece! Or, pick up a cute basket at the local dollar store, and fill it with a variety of baby needs (diapers, soft blankets, bottles, pacifiers, etc).

At a shower I attended recently, the host used a baby bathtub - wrapped individual gifts and placed them in the tub, blew up mini blue balloons (to look like bubbles) and topped it with a rubber duckie. This was a real hit at the shower!

4. Diaper Cakes - These are all the rage for baby showers! Although these are called cakes, they are not edible. The cakes come in a variety of themes, colors, sizes and can are filled with practical items for the new baby. They can even be personalized!

5. Other - Here are some additional ideas that are easy to implement:

Put Votive candles in baby jars

Lamps - to match the theme of the room - take out of the box and use as the centerpiece

Use pacifiers as napkin rings ; use cloth diapers as place-mats

I hope these ideas are helpful! As you can see - it is really easy to create an inexpensive yet lovely centerpiece for the baby shower.

Going on trips with children is something many single persons would never dream about. For parents, however, this is an exciting experience. Not only do they get to travel and discover new things, they also get to impart lessons to their children. Of course, there is the practical issue of keeping the children entertained and well behaved. It is particularly difficult to handle some kids, especially when they are cooped up in the car or an airplane for extended periods of time. Parents who have traveled extensively with their children will have their own tips and tricks to keep the kids quiet. Here are some of those tried and tested methods.

Take their favorite toys.

Depending on the age of your children, they will have their security blanket. Whether it is their favorite plushie or literally a blanket, it will help you calm and soothe their nerves when the length of the trip starts to get to them.

Books are your best friends.

Hopefully, you have introduced your kids to reading and books at an early age. There are numerous advantages to doing so, and education is not the only one. When you are bound to spend hours in the car or the plane (or any mode of transportation for that matter), their favorite books can keep them quiet. You can either read their favorite story to them, or you can have them read on their own.

Bring the tablet computer if you have one.

It is not inconceivable that even children who are below 10 years old already know how to use a tablet computer. In this day and age, some children even start as a toddler! While some parents are averse to the idea, I believe that introducing these gadgets to kids is a good thing. It is a matter of controlling access and what apps you install. If you have a tablet, and your kids use it, then make sure to take it along with you. It will do wonders for your nerves!

Communicate!

This might very well be the most effective thing you can do to keep the kids quiet. You may not be aware of it, but many children get fidgety when they are bored and have no one to interact with. As a parent, you are the first person in their social circle. For some, you may be the only person in their social circle. Take advantage of the travel time to actually talk with the kids. Whatever the topic may be, the important thing is that you pay attention to what the kids are saying. It is also important that you contribute to the conversation and not simply give stock answers or utterances. That long trip is actually a good time to bond with your children! Traveling with kids can be a fun experience. Just make sure that you pack lots of patience with you!
