It actually seems a bit cheeky of Safety 1st to call this a “convertible” car seat. You can use it rear-facing until 35 lbs, and front facing for another 5lbs, until 40lbs! Why bother with the front-facing for 5lbs? It is quite strange logic.
Some users have also tried to use this seat for newborns, and found that newborns are uncomfortable in it. The material and padding seem to be nice, but perhaps the angle of the recline is not good for tiny babies.
Combined, these two facts, of low upper-weight (for a convertible seat) and uncomfortable newborns, leaves one wondering who the Avenue is really designed for? Perhaps it is designed mostly for children around 6 months to a year. If you are on a budget, however, do not be lured in by the low price and the advertisement of “Convertible” – you will get much more use out of a slightly more expensive seat that will last until 65lbs, or converts to a booster. If you need this as a seat to just use temporarily (ie. On vacations) or very occasionally, it may also be suited for you. Also, if you just need to buy a seat in a hurry, and then save up money for a bigger one, some owners have reported finding this seat for very little money on sale.
Other users have complained that the straps are hard to adjust in the rear-facing position, as the strap adjuster gets buried in the back seat. Again, if you are using this only occasionally, you might not mind this inconvenience.
It comes with a removable cup holder, which is a nice idea, and it can be used on either side of the car seat, which is good if you have multiple car seats in your car. The material is available in a boyish black and grey, which may meld well with your car interior, or a playful and stylish pink and brown for girls.
One other positive is that it has quite high harness slots, meaning that if you have tall skinny children it may provide a nice fit for them.
Overall, this seat does not offer great functionality, but is available quite cheaply and may be ideal for some consumers. Think about how long the seat will last, however, before spending your hard-earned dollars.
